This study says you can. When a group of men and women were asked to report their weight and classify themselves as obese, normal weight, or underweight. Study subjects were also asked what weight would be considered obese for them. The study found overall an accurate reporting of weight, but that obese persons tended to overestimate the weight that they would consider themselves obese.

For persons with weight issues, denial is a big factor. They convince themselves "I don't really need to diet; I'm not that fat". What's significant is that individuals who fail to see their as a problem are not likely to do anything such as diet and/or exercise to correct it. Xenical has been used for many years as an adjunct in weight loss. Xenical works to block the absorption of fat. A major side effect of Xenical is oily, fatty stools. By blocking the absorption of fat, a reduction in calories is achieved and, presumably, weight loss will occur. No other major side effects have been reported with this diet drug. What we often term "comfort food" is largely carbohydrate. These carbohydrates increase serotonin levels in the brain and lift mood. I am not here to give medical advice, though I have a health care background. I also learned to critique research studies in grad school. And I would tear this junk apart. This study of the effects of low-carbohydrate diets in pregnancy was intended to study the long-term effects on the baby. The study included 89 subjects!! Now that's a real representative sample, I tell you. These 89 subjects were born to women who had been advised to follow a high-protein diet as a treatment for pre-eclampsia (a complication of pregnancy). Researchers recently subjected this whole big group of 89 subjects to tests of stress, such as public speaking and mental math. Apparently the subjects stress hormone levels rose in proportion to the amount of meat the mother had consumed in late pregnancy. On this basis, they suggest that low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets should be avoided during pregnancy.
This report is truly bogus and for this study to be passed of as scientific research with integrity and credibility is unreal!! I can poke holes in it all day long!!
This study assumed that the subjects' ability to handle stress would be related to the rise in cortisol levels. This bogus study also defined stress as public speaking and mental math, assuming that all subjects would perceive this test as stressful. The study did not measure how the person handled or reacted to the stress, or if the researchers' "public speaking" and "mental math" tests were even perceived as stress by the subjects. And lastly, there was no control group at all used in this study!!
This is a great example of how "research" is being used to sway the public about low-carbohydrate diets and other issues as well. No scientist could draw ANY conclusion about high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets from this study. I feel fortunate that I can look at such studies with a critical eye, but how many are deceived by this junk? Read on for more detail about this study of low-carbohydrate diets - if you want a laugh, that is.
Get info on the Atkins diet here!

Think lean protein to lose weight - Orlando Sentinel : Health & Medicine

Think lean protein to lose weight - Orlando Sentinel : Health & Medicine
The backbone of low carbohydrate diets is protein. Good article that explains why low-fat products are often not low-calorie. I've discussed this about low-fat before; many low-fat products enhance taste by adding sugars. Other diet food myths are presented as well. Using margarine instead of butter does nothing to help lose weight. Skim milk can help you lose weight by reducing fat (no replacing with sugars). If you're going low-fat or low-carbohydrate, it's important that the dieter be savvy in choosing packaged foods. Low-carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins diet don't produce lasting weight loss, according to this study. The study also blames low-carbohydrate diets for a number of complaints, such as headache, diarrhea, etc. The article admits that low-carbohydrate diets can produce weight loss in the short term, but in the long term, the study noted no difference between low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets.

The fact that low-carbohydrate diets and low-fat diets produce the same weight loss results long-term is evidence that the l0w-carbohydrate plans work as well as the "healthy" low-fat diet plans. Many who prefer low-carbohydrate diets, however, report that the experience less hunger. And the quick results seen in low-carbohydrate diet plans certainly are helpful in motivating dieters to continue.

To me, this study showed no "downside" to the low-carbohydrate diet. Such side effects of low-carb dieting as are reported here could be attributed to almost anything. Back during the low-fat days, all these "low-fat" products came out on the market. One problem - people were eating low-fat but not losing weight. And that was mainly because food manufacturers replaced the fat in these foods with sugars to enhance the flavor. Many products had similar calorie value to their full-fat counterpart. There is a similar situation in the "low-carbohydrate" trend.

Bottom line is, calories do count. I personally don't believe that calories in/calories expended is that simple. I believe it's more complicated than that. On the other hand, consuming unlimited calories will make it difficult to lose weight, whether low-carbohydrate or low-fat. And in yet another article, the low-carb dieter was reported to also have pancreatitis, which they admitted probably contributed to the ketoacidosis. Well, I guess so!! The pancreas produces insulin, and inflammation of the pancreas leads to all sorts of serious problems. (The pancreatitis was not linked to the low-carbohydrate diet). A couple of UK women devised a diet and weight loss plan that allows you to eat what you want. Sound like some of those "Eat doughnuts and hot fudge sundaes and lose 30 pounds a month" claims? That's not the rationale these women used. They based their plan on some of Geneen Roth's books about compulsive eating. Ms. Roth has suggested that dieting itself makes us fat, but mostly due to the deprivation mentality we assume when we go on a diet. Eliminate the deprivation form the diet, and deal with underlying issues that drive one to overeat, and you'll lose weight. I have been "watching my weight" ever since I can even remember. And, as you can imagine, I've tried every diet plan and weight loss product under the sun. What better qualifies me as a diet expert??

I was a fat little girl; I was considered "chubby" from the age of 4-5 yrs. I did manage to lose weight and keep my weight under 120# for a number of years - about 20, actually. However, I married 10 years ago, and have fought weight gain ever since. I am currently at the highest weight since I was about 14 years old. I'm over 150# now - may not sound like a lot but I'm under 5' tall!! 150# is too much for someone that short!

I have been on the Weight Watcher's plan, took (REAL!) diet pills (not phentermine, but more like dexedrine and other REAL amphetamines) as a teenager, fasted, and used Slim-Fast. However, the low-carb plans seem to work for a lot of people. Having a Master's degree in nursing, I understand the biophysics and biochem involved in low-carb dieting. And I certainly realize that conventional "low-fat", and "low-cal" plans were not always best!

I found some info recently on low-carb diets and I wanted to share them.

Now we know how Atkins diet works!

Information About "How" The Atkins Diet Works - Surprise!!
Now we know how Atkins diet works!
